The EMA’s human medicines committee recommended Moderna’s mCombriax, the first combined flu and Covid-19 vaccine, for people aged 50 and over.
At its February meeting the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) also backed Novartis’s Rhapsido (remibrutinib) in chronic spontaneous urticaria and, conditionally, Ipsen’s Ojemda (tovorafenib) in paediatric low-grade glioma. It recommended against Acadia’s Daybue (trofinetide) in Rett syndrome and Vanda’s Fanapt (iloperidone) in schizophrenia.

Roche’s fenebrutinib met its goal in a third phase 3 multiple sclerosis trial, but eight patients died on the drug across two studies.
FENhance 1 cut the yearly relapse rate by 51% against Aubagio (teriflunomide), after a 59% cut in FENhance 2. Across the two trials one patient died on teriflunomide and eight, from various causes, on fenebrutinib. Roche says it is still analysing the deaths.
Each arm of FENhance 1 had one case meeting Hy’s Law, the liver injury pattern regulators watch for. Both were without symptoms and resolved. Roche will submit all three studies, including FENtrepid in primary progressive disease, to regulators.

Kyowa Kirin and Amgen stopped all trials of the anti-OX40 antibody rocatinlimab after further cases of Kaposi’s sarcoma.
A safety review found a new confirmed case and a suspected one, on top of an earlier confirmed case. The companies say the drug’s mechanism may be the cause. They concluded the risks may outweigh the benefits in atopic dermatitis, asthma and prurigo nodularis. The studies end once participants finish safety follow-up.

The FDA published its rejection letters to AstraZeneca for Saphnelo and GSK for Exdensur, both citing problems with the data.
The AstraZeneca letter cites “critical data quality issues that affect key analyses, including the primary endpoint” in the lupus application, after the company submitted a corrected dataset late in the review. The GSK letter says the data do not give adequate evidence that Exdensur works in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

Moderna agreed to pay $950m upfront, and up to $1.3bn more, to settle Arbutus and Genevant’s patent claims over its mRNA vaccines.
The $950m is a lump sum due by 8 July. The other $1.3bn depends on Moderna’s appeal over whether section 1498, a federal contracting law, shields vaccine doses sold to the US government. It is paid in full if the appeal fails or is dropped, and in part if it partly succeeds. Moderna owes no royalties and gets a non-exclusive licence to Genevant’s lipid nanoparticle technology for infectious disease vaccines.
Their separate US case against Pfizer and BioNTech continues.

The FDA rejected uniQure’s Huntington’s data as the basis for a filing, and an official accused it of distorting them.
On Monday uniQure said the FDA will not accept its phase 1/2 data on AMT-130, compared against an external control, as the main evidence for approval. The agency strongly recommended a randomised, double-blind trial against sham surgery. uniQure’s shares fell by more than 40%.
On Thursday a senior FDA official, speaking anonymously on a call with reporters, said the agency never agreed to accept the external comparison and accused uniQure of using “distorted” data to mask a failed therapy. The sham arm would involve anaesthesia and “one to three nicks in the scalp”, not a partial burr hole.
uniQure says its data warrant more dialogue on the FDA’s promised regulatory flexibility, and that it is “confident in the strength of the data” it has submitted.
